# My microphone or camera is not working

Usually Chrome or macOS has not been allowed to use it, or another app has it open. The row under its name says which, and switching it on again leads to the fix.

- **Chrome asks the first time**: Switch it on. Chrome shows its question at the top of the window. Choose **Allow**.
- **Blocked in Chrome**: Switch it on, and PointerCam opens a page that shows how to allow it again in Chrome’s site settings.
- **Your Mac isn’t letting Chrome use it**: In **System Settings › Privacy & Security**, under Microphone or Camera, turn on Google Chrome, then restart Chrome.
- **Another app may be using it**: Close video calls and other recorders, then try again.
- **None found**: Check the microphone or camera is plugged in, then reopen the popup.

**In the Mac app:**

For the Mac app, turn PointerCam on under **System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone** or **Camera**.

**In the Chrome extension:**

Pick a different microphone or camera from the menu under its name in the popup to rule out the device itself.

> **Tip:** The level under the microphone’s name moves when it hears you. If it moves, your voice is being recorded.
