PointerCam vs Canvid

A Canvid alternative that exports for free.

Canvid is an app for Windows and Mac that zooms in on your clicks, sold once or by subscription, and you can try it without paying but not export. PointerCam places close-ups on your clicks in Chrome or in its Mac app, exports on its free plan, and turns the same recording into a step-by-step guide.

Choose Canvid if

  • You’d rather pay once. Canvid’s Desktop license is $75, with lifetime updates.
  • You record any app on Windows. Canvid has an app for Windows as well as the Mac.
  • You want AI voice cleanup, and your webcam’s background blurred or swapped.
  • You want Quick Share: one click uploads the video and copies its link.
  • You pay yearly: Canvid Pro is $7 a month that way, $3 less than Studio.

Choose PointerCam if

  • You want to export without paying. Canvid can be tried without a license except for exporting and share links, and PointerCam’s free plan exports 10-minute videos at up to 1080p.
  • You work in the browser. PointerCam’s Chrome extension records a tab, a window or your whole screen, on Windows or a Mac.
  • You need a step-by-step guide from the same recording, as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown.
  • You’re new to editing video. The editor opens in Simple, with the close-ups already placed and the video ready to export.

Export on the free plan

You can try every Canvid feature without a license, except exporting videos and making Quick Share links. To export, you buy the Desktop license, $75 once with 1 GB of cloud storage, or Pro, $7 a month billed yearly or $19 monthly.

PointerCam’s free plan exports. Videos run up to 10 minutes at up to 1080p with a small PointerCam mark, and guides have no length limit. Studio removes the mark and the limits for $10 a month yearly or $20 monthly, and a pass is $9 for 7 days, paid once.

Record where you already work

Canvid is a desktop app for Windows 10 and later, and for Macs with Apple silicon on macOS 15 or later.

PointerCam’s Chrome extension records a tab, a window or your whole screen, in Chrome on Windows or on a Mac, and follows your clicks on web pages. On a Mac, the PointerCam app records any app and follows your clicks in all of them.

An editor made for your first video

PointerCam opens a recording already finished: close-ups on your clicks, every click marked, ready to export. The editor starts in Simple, which shows what was done and the choices most videos make, one row each, like zoom strength, captions or the background.

The first time you open it, a short tour points out each part. When you want more, Pro lays out every setting, and ⌘K finds any of them by what it changes or by a problem you type, like “silence”.

One recording, a video and a guide

Every click in a PointerCam recording also becomes a numbered step in a guide: a close-up of the screen with a box round what you pressed, and a line that already says what you clicked, like Click “Billing”. Change the words, add tips and warnings, then export it as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown.

Canvid makes the video. For written steps you would need a second tool beside it.

Where Canvid is the better pick

Canvid sells a license you pay for once, runs as an app on Windows as well as the Mac, cleans up your voice with AI, blurs or swaps your webcam’s background, and shares a video with one click.

If you want those, choose Canvid. If you want to export for free, record in Chrome, or need the guide, choose PointerCam.
