PointerCam vs Screen Studio
A Screen Studio alternative that runs in Chrome.
Screen Studio is a Mac app, and its FAQ says Windows is not in its near-future plans. PointerCam records in Chrome on Windows or a Mac, and in its own Mac app, with close-ups placed on your clicks. It has a free plan, and every recording also gives you a step-by-step guide.
Choose Screen Studio if
- You record iPhone or iPad apps. Screen Studio records them over a USB cable, in a device frame.
- You want share links, with comments on the exact second and view counts.
- You edit by transcript, or want your webcam cut out from its background.
- You pay yearly: Screen Studio is $9 a month that way, $1 less than Studio.
Choose PointerCam if
- You record in Chrome, on Windows or on a Mac.
- You want to use it properly before paying. The free plan exports 10-minute videos at up to 1080p.
- You’re new to editing video. The editor opens in Simple, with the close-ups already placed and the video ready to export.
- You also need the written steps. The same recording becomes a guide you export as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown.
- You pay month to month: Studio is $20 a month, Screen Studio $29.

Record where you already work
Screen Studio is made for the Mac and nothing else, and its FAQ says there are no near-future plans for Windows. If you work on Windows, or what you show lives in Chrome, that rules it out.
PointerCam’s Chrome extension records a tab, a window or your whole screen, in Chrome on Windows or on a Mac. It follows your clicks on web pages, and each one becomes a close-up in the video. On a Mac, the PointerCam app records any app and follows your clicks in all of them.

An editor made for your first video
PointerCam opens a recording already finished: close-ups on your clicks, every click marked, ready to export. The editor starts in Simple, which shows what was done and the choices most videos make, one row each, like zoom strength, captions or the background.
The first time you open it, a short tour points out each part. When you want more, Pro lays out every setting, and ⌘K finds any of them by what it changes or by a problem you type, like “silence”.

Use the whole editor for free
Screen Studio has two plans, both paid, with every feature on both: $9 a month billed yearly, or $29 month to month.
PointerCam’s free plan has the same editor as Studio. Videos run up to 10 minutes and export at up to 1080p and 30 fps with a small PointerCam mark, and guides have no length limit. Studio removes the mark and the limits for $10 a month yearly or $20 monthly, and a pass is $9 for 7 days, paid once.
One recording, a video and a guide
Every click in a PointerCam recording also becomes a numbered step in a guide: a close-up of the screen with a box round what you pressed, and a line that already says what you clicked, like Click “Billing”. Change the words, add tips and warnings, then export it as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown.
Screen Studio makes the video. For written steps you would need a second tool beside it.

Where Screen Studio is ahead
Some of what Screen Studio does, PointerCam does not do: recording an iPhone or iPad over a cable, editing by transcript, cutting your webcam out of its background, AI voiceovers, and share links with comments and view counts.
If those are why you record, Screen Studio is the better pick. If you need Chrome, Windows, a free plan or a guide, PointerCam is.
Questions
What people ask.
No. Screen Studio runs only on macOS, and its FAQ says there are no near-future plans for Windows. PointerCam’s Chrome extension records in Chrome on Windows, with a close-up on each click you make on a web page.
