PointerCam vs Screenity

A Screenity alternative with close-ups on the free plan.

Screenity’s Chrome extension is free and open source, and turns your clicks into zooms in its paid editor in the cloud. PointerCam places close-ups on your clicks on the free plan, edits on your computer, and turns the same recording into a step-by-step guide.

Choose Screenity if

  • You want a free recorder with no watermark and no time limit, and you don’t need zooms. Screenity’s extension is free under GPLv3.
  • You want to read the recorder’s code, or run your own copy.
  • You record on a Chromebook. Screenity says its extension runs on ChromeOS.
  • You share by link from an editor hosted in Europe, with scenes, moving layouts and captions that light up word by word.

Choose PointerCam if

  • You want close-ups on your clicks without paying. Screenity’s zooms come with its editor, at $10 a month billed yearly, and PointerCam’s free plan places them on every click.
  • You need a step-by-step guide from the recording, as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown.
  • You’re new to editing video. The editor opens in Simple, with the close-ups already placed and the video ready to export.
  • You want a free Mac app that records any app and follows your clicks in all of them.
  • You’d rather edit on your computer. Screenity’s editor runs in its cloud, and PointerCam’s keeps the recording on your computer.

Close-ups on the free plan

Screenity’s extension notes your clicks while you record, and they become zooms when you open the recording in its editor. The editor is Screenity’s paid plan: $10 a month billed yearly or $14 monthly, after a 7-day trial.

PointerCam samples your pointer 120 times a second while you record. When you stop, the video opens with a close-up on each click, arriving just before you press, on the free plan. Studio adds 4K at 60 fps and removes the small mark.

One recording, a video and a guide

Every click in a PointerCam recording also becomes a numbered step in a guide: a close-up of the screen with a box round what you pressed, and a line that already says what you clicked, like Click “Billing”. Export it as PDF, Word, a web page or Markdown, on the free plan.

An editor made for your first video

PointerCam opens a recording already finished: close-ups on your clicks, every click marked, ready to export. The editor starts in Simple, which shows what was done and the choices most videos make, one row each, like zoom strength, captions or the background.

The first time you open it, a short tour points out each part. When you want more, Pro lays out every setting, and ⌘K finds any of them by what it changes or by a problem you type, like “silence”.

Where the work happens

Screenity’s extension saves recordings on your computer. Its editor is in the cloud, hosted in Europe, and transcribes your voice on its own servers there.

PointerCam records, edits and exports on your computer, captions included, and there is no PointerCam server that could receive a recording. That also means PointerCam has no share link.

Where Screenity is the better pick

Screenity’s recorder is free and open source, with no watermark and no time limit, and it runs on Chromebooks. Its paid editor builds videos from scenes, with moving layouts, device mockups, music and share links.

If you want a free recorder and no zooms, or a cloud editor with scenes and links, choose Screenity. If you want the close-ups and the guide on the free plan, choose PointerCam.
